Combos, clears and best scores
The light game layer on top of studying. Streaks while you play, perfect hands, and the best score Verso keeps for every deck you clear.
Studying in Verso has a little bit of game in it. None of it changes which cards you see or when: it only keeps count, and remembers your best.
Combos
Three Got it grades in a row bring up a small pill between the running counts under the card, such as ★ 3 in a row. It grows with each card you know, with a little pop each time unless your system asks for reduced motion, and disappears the moment you mark one Still learning. A rewind takes back the last grade, and the count follows.
The combo counts within the current round, so each new round starts from zero.
For screen readers the pill itself is hidden. Instead, a grade that reaches 5, 10, 20, 30 and so on in a row is announced as “Got it. 10 in a row.”
Clearing a deck or hand
A deck or hand is cleared when a round ends with nothing left to learn. The summary’s title says so:
| Cleared in… | A deck page | A hand from Play |
|---|---|---|
| Round 1 | Perfect deck | Perfect hand |
| Later rounds | Deck cleared | Hand cleared |
A perfect clear gets its title in a gradient of amber, rose and teal, and the line “All 25 on the first try.” A later clear says something like “Cleared in 3 rounds. 22 of 25 on the first try.”
Above the title of any clear, the first five cards of round 1 fan out face up, like a hand of cards. When motion is welcome they deal out from a stack; with reduced motion they’re simply there.
Best scores
When you clear a deck, Verso saves your score for it: how many of its cards you got right in round 1, out of how many it has. It doesn’t matter how many rounds the clear took after that. Only your best score is kept, so a worse run never replaces a better one.
The summary says when a clear set a record:
- “First clear of this deck”, the first time
- “New best on this deck: 23 of 25”, when you beat your best
- In a hand, the deck is named, such as “First clear of HSK 1 · Deck 3”, and several at once read “3 decks with a new best”.
When a deck counts
On a deck page you always play the whole deck, so every clear counts.
A hand from Play counts toward a deck only when it held every card of that deck. With hands of 25 and Shuffle on, a hand usually holds a few cards from many decks, so it doesn’t count toward any of them; you’re still playing the same cards, they just aren’t scored per deck. A hand that holds whole decks does count, for example:
- any hand with Cards per hand set to All
- a hand of 25 Chinese cards with Shuffle off: every HSK deck holds 25 cards, so each hand takes exactly one deck
Where your results show
Each deck you’ve cleared is marked across the site:
- A deck page shows a stamp under its description, such as CLEARED · BEST 23 OF 25.
- A category page marks each cleared deck’s tile: “Cleared · best 23 of 25”.
- A subject page marks each category’s tile with how many of its decks you’ve cleared, such as “3 of 12 decks cleared”.
- Home does the same on the featured packs in Play a pack.
- The Play page shows a ring such as 3/12 on each pack, and a ✓ on every cleared deck chip in Build a mix. Its label reads “cleared, best 23 of 25” to a screen reader.
The marks are filled in from your browser as each page loads, and they update when you clear a deck in another tab.
